CEL delimits territories to prevent inappropriate activities in hydroelectric power plant areas

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) started a project to take care of the areas where hydroelectric power plants are built, to prevent ill-intentioned people from making improper use of these sites.

"We started to delimit! This week, our team began a plan to stake out the boundaries of our property in the northern area of the Embalse Cerrón Grande wetland, in order to delimit and protect our firm and fluctuating lands", stated CEL.

These activities will prevent illegal occupations, subletting, deforestation, and soil and water contamination.

This first time, these works will extend for 6.3 kilometers, starting from the border area between San Francisco Lempa and the site known as El Faro, in San Luis del Carmen, department of Chalatenango.

Each step will be done working together with the inhabitants. "In this effort we are working with the Cooperative Associations, which take advantage of the land for planting vegetables and basic grains, raising livestock and artisanal fishing", said Daniel Alvarez, president of CEL.

Meanwhile, the member of the Asociación Cooperativa Rivera in San Luis del Carmen, Marco Tulio Guardado, said that with the establishment of these limits they are now more "empowered" with the lands under CEL's protection and that the inhabitants protect and administer them. In total, 46 Cooperative Associations are responsible for administering these lands.

The pilot plan has an estimated duration of two months and will also be implemented in the other hydroelectric plants in the country.
