In the framework of the Panel "Creating value in the circular economy to mitigate climate challenges", Holcim received the "Innovation in Industry" award for its outstanding role in environmental sustainability.

Holcim, the leading company in the cement industry, emphasized through its representative that it is taking a proactive approach to sustainability and the circular economy, recognizing the imperative need to build well-being for both people and the planet.

The company has identified four main areas in which the circular economy can have a significant impact on its operations, highlighting innovation and investment in sustainable technologies and practices.

Use of Green Fuels

Holcim has invested millions of dollars to replace fossil fuels with more sustainable options. This approach not only reduces dependence on fossil fuels but also promotes the reuse of materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Solar energy

The company has made a significant commitment to renewable energy, integrating solar panels into its operations in El Salvador. Although 20% of its energy comes from this source, it represents considerable progress towards reducing the company's carbon footprint.

Water management

Holcim is aware of the critical importance of water and its management, which is why it strives to achieve a neutral water footprint. The company recognizes that water should not be considered a problem only when its availability in the home is affected, but is a shared responsibility, which implies an active commitment to the conservation and efficient use of the resource.

Cement Recycling

In an innovative turn towards sustainability, Holcim is exploring ways to recycle existing concrete structures instead of producing new cement. This approach not only avoids the extraction of new materials from quarries but also significantly reduces the CO2 emissions associated with the production of new cement. The company's vision is that, in the future, demolished buildings can be reused to create new cement, closing the material's life cycle.

Holcim faces these challenges with a determination to fully integrate into the circular economy, recognizing both the difficulties and the opportunities that this approach brings. By adopting more sustainable practices and reducing its environmental impact, Holcim not only positions itself as a leader in the cement industry but also makes a significant contribution to the fight against climate change and the move towards a more sustainable future.
