Commission backs loan underwriting to finance small businesses

Written by Evelyn Alas

In their working session, the deputies of the Finance and Special Budget Commission issued a favorable opinion to authorize the Executive Branch of the Treasury to allow the Banco de Desarrollo de la República de El Salvador (BANDESAL)  to subscribe a loan with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The amount of the loan is US$100 million and will be used to finance the operation called "Programa de Acceso al Crédito para la Micro, Pequeña y Mediana Empresa (MIPYMES)".

With this favorable opinion, which will be voted in the legislative plenary, it is intended to continue supporting MSMEs, because they are strategic actors in the growth of the economy, the transformation of the national productive apparatus and the improvement of the country's competitive position.

The director of Investment and Public Credit of the Ministerio de Hacienda, Marlon Herrera, who made the request before the legislators, explained that the resources of BANDESAL serve to support the growth of MSMEs and this is done to promote access to second floor productive credits.

Last january, the IDB managed this loan being the third individual operation under the Línea de Crédito Condicional para Proyectos de Inversión (CCLIP for access to business and housing credit in El Salvador.

This loan was approved and has been under implementation since july 2020 for US$400 million to promote productive activity and social welfare in the Central American country.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are strategic actors in the growth of the economy, the transformation of the national productive apparatus, and the improvement of the country's competitive position.
