First loan with Saudi Arabia approved for development of electric energy from the Acelhuate River

In order to promote the use of clean and renewable electric energy in El Salvador, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly, with 70 votes, authorized the Government to sign, for the first time, a loan agreement with the Saudi Fund.

This loan will be the first that the country requests to this institution of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for an amount of US$83 million, according to what was stated in the 145th plenary session.

This money will be used to finance the project called "Installation of an electricity generation plant with biogas in the Acelhuate River", in order to treat the organic and residual waters that are discharged into the tributary, specifically in the sector of the Urbina River.

In addition, it is intended to generate biogas to be used in the generation of energy to enable the productive capacity of renewable energies.

"With this plan we are betting on recovering the Acelhuate River and the whole issue of the environmental load that this entails. This is the first formal attempt that will be made to rescue these waters that ultimately flow into the Lempa River", said legislator Christian Guevara.

The executing agency of the project will be the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL),  which aims to increase energy production and thus have greater coverage to benefit the entire Salvadoran population. The country's energy matrix is composed of hydroelectric, geothermal, and solar energy sources.

The project will be located in the department of San Salvador, between the municipalities of Ciudad Delgado and Cuscatancingo.

The project is expected to benefit all the inhabitants of these areas (16,000 families) and, indirectly, the residents of this department, as well as those of La Libertad, Cuscatlán, Cabañas and Chalatenango (1.3 million inhabitants).
