The minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, explained that from january to december of last year, the country reached more than 1.4 million visitors and we expected 1.2 million. The projection in foreign exchange was US$800 million and it surpassed it with US$1,462 million.

A large part of these visits came from salvadorans living abroad, who make up the largest percentage, according to the official.

"I thank the salvadorans abroad, who are the ones who have visited us the most. We estimate that 60% of visitors are salvadorans living in the United States", she said.

Regarding the growth in foreign exchange, she explained that tourist stays have increased from one week to 15 days, and in some cases up to three months, and it is estimated that the average daily expenditure has increased from US$90 to US$130.

Such is the preference for staying and enjoying the country that, during this month, thousands are still vacationing on the beaches and in the mountains. "This is one of the best times of the year in sunrises and sunsets, and in destinations such as beaches, lakes and towns, and visitors continue to take advantage of it", she said.

Despite of the pandemic, El Salvador remains among the preferences of tourists as an emerging destination to visit and live; also as a candidate to become a venue for major events, especially for its beaches.

In 2022, at least three continental and world championships will be held, which predicts more economic spillover in the area and better opportunities for development and welfare for salvadorans.
