Written by Karla Gutiérrez

In 2021, the Ministerio de Hacienda y el Banco Internacional de Reconstrucción y Fomento signed a loan for US$50 million for "Additional Financing for El Salvador's Response Project to COVID-19". To date, the available amount of this loan is US$410,810.00.

Likewise, in 2022, this government portfolio obtained a second financing from the bank for the same project in the amount of US$100 million, of which US$11,727,904.00 is still available.  The free balances of both loans total US$12,138,714.00.

The working group received delegates from the Treasury, who explained that the objective of making the modifications to the regulations is to strengthen the National Health System with the provision of medicines, equipment, and medical supplies. It is also intended to increase the capacity of the hospitals and to continue the training of health personnel.

The US$410,810.00 will be used to purchase and supply vinyl flooring in the imaging and operating room areas of the San Rafael, Zacamil and Saldaña national hospitals; to pay the professionals of the COVID-19 Response Program Management Unit; and to complete the financing of supply contracts.

The remainder of the second loan will be used to supply, install, and start up the MRI area at the Rosales National Hospitals, as well as the electrical generators for the MRI areas at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in San Miguel. In addition, the Emergency Care area at the Zacamil National Hospital will be upgraded.
