Corn shortages in the first half of november

Written by Karla Zepeda

According to statements made by the director of the Cámara Salvadoreña de pequeños y medianos productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), Luis Treminio, since august of this year, the country already perceived a lack of corn in the country.

The deficit is 8 million quintals of corn, this is due to the fact that, in the salvadoran territory during the month of september, there has been an increase in the amount of rainfall, which flooded the cultivated land in some sectors.

"We have not yet quantified the damages, but we did have losses", said Treminio.

Because corn is one of the grains most used by the salvadoran population, the market has been supplied with imports that will cover until the third or fourth week of october, estimated the president of the guild.

He said that the country's production for the year 2022 was 15 million quintals. "For this year we already have the deficit that we said in december last year: that the production we had reached until the month of august. In other words, right now we are consuming what has been imported".

The solution proposed by the government is the opening of agromarkets; however, Treminio affirms that the first thing that has to exist is the production of basic grains, to be able to take to the agromarkets, as well as a strategic reserve, so that there is product and thus be able to maintain prices.
