Written by Miguel Crespin

The Cámara Salvadoreña de Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicaciones (CASATIC) with the support of IDB Lab and the European Union, launched in june 2023 the "Second Workertech Challenge", as part of a project that aims to benefit independent and informal workers in El Salvador.

There were 20 projects that submitted their application and after the jury's evaluation, three winning startups were selected: Fiado App, Alfi Latam and Quien por Mi (QxM), the latter based in Argentina.

The Second Workertech Challenge was aimed at benefiting the home and care services sector: domestic services, childcare, elderly care, home repairs (white goods, plumbing, construction, among others).

WorkerTech solutions are defined as those digital services that offer self-employed and informal workers benefits to improve their social protections and productivity, for example: health insurance, professional training, financial services and associativity.

In june 2023 CASATIC, with the support of IDB Lab and the European Union, launched the second Workertech Challenge in El Salvador. There were 20 applications received from local and international startups, being 6 finalists and after the evaluation of a jury three winners were chosen: Fiado App, Alfi Latam and Quien por Mi (QxM), the latter of Argentine origin.

WORKERTECH solutions promote greater productivity and improved living conditions among self-employed workers. CASATIC, IDB Lab and the European Union are implementing in El Salvador this project that seeks to benefit 15,000 independent workers (40% of them women) through new digital solutions, proposals for new public policies and an observatory with indicators on this industry.

The 6 finalists took part in a bootcamp where they were given the opportunity to strengthen their proposals and held a pitch day with an evaluation jury whose mission was to select the winners.

After completing the deliberation process, the winners of this Second Workertech Challenge were:

  • ALFI LATAM: It is a comprehensive financial education solution, through an interactive and personalized experience, for people to improve their financial skills, make better decisions and have access to financial products tailored to their needs.
  • QUIEN POR MÍ (Qxm): Technological solution that aims to provide training, advice and accompaniment to workers in the home and care services sector, so that they receive benefits such as inclusive credit, insurance and medical services.

The winners will have 18 months to scale and implement their solution and the Project will be awarding around $500,000 in impact investment to help them achieve their goals. It is expected that close to 4,500 workers will benefit from these Workertech solutions.

These 3 startups join the winners of the first cohort that was awarded at the beginning of 2023:

  • SOSTENGO: It is an Insurtech that offers digital insurance for vehicles and motorcycles, who launched a product focused on delivery drivers (delivery).
  • LÍNEA ROSA: Transportation service for women, provided by women. This company will create a cooperative to provide digital credits to its women drivers.
