18% of the corn planting in El Salvador has been lost

Luis Treminio President of the Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), spoke in a television interview about the current situation of agriculture in El Salvador, mentioning that the sector is in trouble.

Treminio, explained that of the corn planting that took place in may, about 543,713 quintals have been lost, which represents 18% of production. On the bean side, he also explained that 18,360 quintals were lost, which represents a total of 15% of the production sown in the same period of time.

These losses, according to the president of the organization, are due to the fact that the eastern zone concentrates the largest amount of crops of the aforementioned grains and the area is having serious problems with the El Niño phenomenon, which does not allow a good development of the crops.

But the outlook for the following months could worsen, due to forecasts from the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which, according to Treminio, predicts that the El Niño phenomenon will continue, so grain production could be even more compromised than it already is.

"We insist that, instead of talking about food security, we should be talking about food sovereignty", said the president of CAMPO, who requested that government authorities should take urgent measures to address the current situation of agriculture in the country.
