MAG to deliver inputs to producers for the recovery of the coffee sector

The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) informed that they are working to maintain these characteristics of high added value in production.

We guarantee the quality and health of coffee seedlings for small producers, choosing nurseries that meet the criteria requested by the Climate Resilience Program.

The nurseries provide the plants that the beneficiary growers will use to renovate their farms. Since this is an important and long-term investment, it is important to take care of all the details.

The referred ministry shared the main criteria to deliver coffee saplings. The seeds must come from seed banks with a quality higher than 80%.

Nurseries must be located in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec, Bálsamo-Quezaltepec and Chichontepec mountain ranges. In addition, they must guarantee good practices in nursery management and deliver seedlings in biodegradable bags.

Part of the program will also rescue the function of the coffee forest, which is fundamental for water catchment and conservation of biodiversity and temperature.

For the 2022/2023 period, which has begun with the harvest, the production forecast in quintals is 23,350, as of october 31. This is the harvest collected up to that date, however, more data still needs to be gathered to give a goal of the total to be harvested. At the end of the 2021/2022 season, the sector reported 922,040 quintals at the end of the season.
