Jiquilisco fishing cooperative increases shrimp production by 70%

Written by Karla Gutiérrez

Thanks to the Adelante Rural program, implemented by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), improvements have been made in the Cooperativa Walbert Romero de R. L., who now have electricity, adequate production systems and technology, allowing them to increase shrimp production in ponds by up to 70%.

With an investment of more than US$47,000, the families of the cooperative produce shrimp in stages to boost the local economy.

This increase in production represents 15 quintals per pond; previously it was around 7 or 8 quintals.

The producers have benefited from improvements to the electric power supply to have the capacity to have a fryer and equipment, such as power pumps for fresh water.  They have also been provided with concentrates and technical assistance.

The program's aquaculture chain specialist, José Bermúdez, emphasized that the intervention in the Walbert Romero Cooperative is comprehensive because, in addition to the inputs and technical assistance, it includes actions to adapt to the effects and impacts of climate change, which is why 400 linear meters of borders were repaired and material was extracted from ponds to achieve the appropriate depth for shrimp production. These actions are financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

The members said that conditions in the area have changed with government support, not only in terms of production but also in terms of security, since they can now carry out their work without fear of being victims of crime.
