DAVIVIENDA SEGUROS, GIZ and FUNDEMAS share biodiversity and business success stories

Written by Evelyn Alas

Davivienda Seguros and its project for the recovery and restoration of the Barra de Santiago Mangrove, is one of the flagship biodiversity alliances executed in partnership with the German Cooperation GIZ and FUNDEMAS, for the application of biodiversity criteria in the productive systems of companies.

GIZ, Davivienda Seguros and FUNDEMAS signed a public-private alliance, more than 4 years ago, in favor of biodiversity, to strengthen the protection of the Barra de Santiago complex (Ahuachapán) which has more than 11,500 hectares of extension, home to species of flora and fauna that provide environmental services for this area of the country.

FUNDEMAS projected DAVIVIENDA to participate in the Ideas for a Green Re-occupation IRV fund competition of the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ), through the Biodiversity and Business program, and on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project will contribute with technical advice to establish a baseline on the state of mangrove biodiversity and develop a management and monitoring plan that provides tools and information to support, among other aspects, decision making, and especially to demonstrate the positive impacts of the actions carried out for its conservation.

The project includes the implementation of the “Seguro de Vida Verde” tool, so that Davivienda can implement an action plan in favor of biodiversity, through the collection of information that will allow visualizing how Davivienda's services are related to biodiversity and the voluntary actions that can be taken to further strengthen its commitment to its conservation in the long term.

Under this vision, Davivienda Seguros promotes the “Seguro de Vida Verde” as a product to generate shared value for the benefit of the country and aimed at protecting Salvadoran families, who, by acquiring this service, contribute to environmental conservation in an integral way, with the restoration of the mangrove forest, the accompaniment of communities and the promotion of training and research on environmental issues.

During 2020, through the “Seguro de Vida Verde” Environmental Program, Davivienda Seguros contributed eight reforestation days in this same mangrove complex, with a total of 20,000 seeds transferred to a mangrove restoration project and 362 trees planted. This commitment generates several ecosystem benefits, one of them being carbon sequestration, one of the country's and the world's commitments.

The year 2022 represented the fourth consecutive year of implementation of the “Seguro de Vida Verde” environmental program and the second consecutive year with the participation of the German Development Cooperation Agency - GIZ, with the following cumulative results as of 2023.
