The minister of Agriculture and Livestock, David Martinez, began the phase of training and technical, financial and commercial advice for more than 850 farmers benefited from the RECETO program (self-sustainable cultivation of cabbage, onion and tomato), in the northern area of Chalatenango.

The program is currently building more than 10,000 square meters of protected crops in the municipalities of La Palma and San Ignacio.

The minister of Agriculture supervised the arrival of containers carrying the structures of more than 200 greenhouses that will be installed in the coming days and are estimated to generate more than 3,500 direct jobs and 18,000 indirect jobs.

At the same time, Minister Martinez began the training sessions that the beneficiaries will receive. These are focused on marketing, self-sustainable production and good agricultural practices, and are conducted by specialists from the Centro Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria y Forestal (CENTA), Instituto Salvadoreño de Transformación Agraria (ISTA), Banco de Fomento Agropecuario (BFA) and Dirección de Inteligencia Agropecuaria (DIMAG), of the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG).

The advisory and training services are part of the Sistemas Integrados de Agroinsumos de Alto Rendimiento (SIAR) implemented by MAG, which include the installation of greenhouses, drip irrigation systems, lateral mounting systems, open-air irrigation systems and pumping systems.

"We do not come to promise you things that cannot be done, we come to work for you, as you really deserve it. We want to give you the right support and help; we will take farmers out of the circle of poverty. It fills me with pride that soon you will be the largest horticulturists in the country", said minister Martinez.

He said: "We hope that in addition to being farmers they will also be entrepreneurs, that is our dream; that is why the advisory services will be comprehensive and we will teach them how to manage their resources. We will achieve this hand in hand with you, the farmers who work with all the effort; the teams of our Ministry, CENTA and the BFA will provide you with the inputs".

The progress of the productive infrastructure with first world technology was also inspected by minister Martinez, and he verified that the progress of the construction is of more than 10,000 square meters of protected crops, with precision irrigation systems. However, in the next few days he estimates that the construction of more than 180 greenhouses will be completed.

The government initiative seeks to change a reality inherited from the neglect of previous governments, who for more than 30 decades tried to do away with the country's agricultural sector, importing up to 80% of the country's foodstuffs.

One of the purposes of RECETO is to achieve a staggered production of fruits, vegetables and greens, in order to generate a sustainable production that responds to the needs of Salvadorans and to achieve high productivity and commercialization, the program includes technical assistance, traceability, the provision of inputs, financial support and first-rate technological equipment.
