The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is advancing in the construction of Package 4 of the Periférico Gerardo Barrios, which consists of the construction of two major bridges over the Río Grande de San Miguel and Río Taisihuat, with their respective connection works.

The Periférico Gerardo Barrios is being built in four packages. Package one has already been completed; packages two and four are under construction; and package three is in the bidding process. It is being executed with an investment of US$160 million and will directly benefit the more than 245,120 inhabitants of the municipalities through which the route passes, and all those who drive to the eastern part of the country.

Section 4 of this mega project is 27.4% complete and is being built with an investment of US$24,193,868.86, both in construction and supervision.

This work is supported by the Government of Japan through the International Cooperation Agency. Construction of a bridge over the Río Grande de San Miguel, 110 meters long, with a pre-stressed concrete box girder, including 845 meters of access to the bridge.

A total length of 955 meters is planned for its construction. Excavation work with machinery is currently underway on this bridge, as well as the construction of piles in the central pile, heading of piles in abutment 1 and abutment 2, shaping of the floor for leveling concrete, abutment 2, and other works.

Construction of a bridge over the Rio Taisihuat , with a length of 105 meters, of pre-stressed concrete beams, with accesses to the bridge of 485 meters, a total length of 590 meters is planned for its construction.

Pile stripping tasks are being carried out on pile 2, backfilling for abutment 2 structures, forming of fill for approach slab on abutment 1, the process for the construction of the masonry wall began, filling of structures on pile 1 and abutment 2, dynamic load tests on pile 4, removal of molds from the last section of abutment 2.

The foundations for the bridge over the Rio Grande de San Miguel will be 1.5 meter diameter cast-in-place concrete piles. Five 22-meter long piles will be used for the entrance abutment.

The pile will have 15 piles in three rows of five piles each, with a length of 29.50 meters. The exit abutment will be founded on 12 piles, formed in two rows of six piles each, all 30 meters long.

In addition, a 7.2 meter by 5.5 meter box will be built to allow vehicular access for the interconnection of local streets. Auxiliary access roads to this box will be built as part of a system of minor turnarounds.

The bridge over the Río Taisihuat  will have three spans of 25, 40 and 40 meters, with two piers in the riverbed. The entry access begins in the area where the urban section ends in Hato Nuevo. The foundations of both abutments and the first pier will be footings supported directly on the rock strata, and the foundation of the second pier will be 22 concrete piles.
