MOP begins mitigation works in Atonal condominiums gully in Soyapango

Written by Evelyn Alas

The minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, started this monday the mitigation works in a gully that has put the inhabitants of the Atonal condominiums in Soyapango at risk.

"Today we begin one more work that is being developed in the Central Government, a work that aims to protect the lives and property of the families of the Atonal condominiums", said the head of Public Works, who supervised the start of the work.

The official detailed that the gully was formed after the collapse of the vault that crosses the place, which channels the waters of the Acelhuate river, due to the heavy rains registered in the last years, which caused the floods of this tributary. The collapse of this vault and the resulting gully threaten to undermine the Atonal condominium buildings.

"Families are at risk, even part of some homes have been damaged due to the collapse of the vault and today we are starting with the necessary works to ensure that now the families are safer", said minister Rodriguez.

"It is about 200 meters long that the vault has. We are going to rebuild the hydraulic bed, we are also going to completely rebuild about 15 meters of the vault and we are also going to make a stone planking to channel the Acelhuate River", said the minister of Public Works.

He also stated that the project has an investment of more than US$1.5 million, benefiting more than 10,000 inhabitants of the Atonal condominiums. "We hope to finish (the works) by the middle of this year, in the afternoon, to be able to guarantee that the families of this sector will have their peace, security and confidence restored", he said.

Minister Rodríguez also informed that the Government is executing other mitigation works in the municipality of Soyapango, among which he highlighted a project to eliminate a gully in the Jardines del Bulevar urbanization, with an investment of close to US$700 thousand, and another to alminate two mega gullies in the El Matazano sector, with an investment of US$3.7 million.
