3M launches campaign that seeks to raise awareness among drivers during their travels

Written by Leydin Sorto

During the last quarter of the year is when traffic accidents tend to report an increase according to statistics from the Viceministerio de Transporte , and although data from the first semester of this year reports an 8% reduction in mishaps.

Annual data for the year 2022 show that the months with more traffic accidents in 2022 were march, october, november and december with 9% of representation respectively.

With the “Hazte Visible”, initiative, 3M seeks to share knowledge and worldwide experiences on vehicle demarcation with a focus on technology and effectiveness, seeking to create awareness in the transportation sector; communication materials will be made available to the Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Vial (CONASEVI) and the Viceministerio de Transporte, for the different road actors, and work will be done to structure a training plan for inspection centers and traffic authorities on a national scale.

3M will continue to support the execution of campaigns and road operations by CONASEVI. Promoting road safety and awareness in the sector, in addition to supporting the institution in initiatives to improve vehicle visibility in the sector, thereby promoting road culture and seeking compliance with traffic regulations.

"For 3M, contributing to safer streets for everyone is a fundamental task, it is part of the responsibility that we have as a company, that is why we join the campaigns that responsible organizations have carried out", said Morales.

In this scenario it is important to highlight the work done by the country's security authorities, as well as the entities responsible for regulating public policies on road safety, proof of this have been the most recent reforms to the traffic regulations that not only include an increase in the amounts of the fines but also obligations for those who drive any type of vehicle.

A segment of the salvadoran vehicle fleet to which attention must be paid is cargo transportation, the Dirección de Transporte de Carga Pesada of the Viceministerio de Transporte, has developed in recent months important work sessions and modifications to certain aspects involving this sector.

The establishment of schedules for the transit of heavy cargo transportation on specific streets and highways is one of them, as well as vehicle controls to determine that the units circulate with the regulations, is also another constant action of the authorities, among these regulations are the use of appropriate security measures for safer circulation, for example the use of highly reflective safety devices, to ensure that they have better visibility on the road during night hours.

Article 187 of the general traffic and road safety regulations states that "Vehicles whose authorized capacity is over three thousand kilograms, as well as their trailers and semi-trailers, must place at least two highly reflective road safety devices in the rear, such as: diamond grade reflective adhesive strips of at least one thousand square centimeters of area each that reflect or project red and white light placed at least at both ends of each back of the vehicle.

"These actions allow us as a company to support the transportation sector and the government, accompanying these initiatives through a significant investment in high quality products and road safety education to different sectors", said Salvador Morales, specification engineer for Central America and the Caribbean of 3M.

Some data on the cargo sector as part of the road accident rate in El Salvador indicate that 542 traffic accidents have been caused by cargo transportation so far this year, with 28 people killed and more than 200 injured, to avoid such incidents it is important that this sector takes into account the necessary and basic safety measures such as reflectivity devices that will allow them to be more visible on the roads.
