Davivienda is the first multi-Latin organization, with presence in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador, to receive the Carbon Neutral certification from Icontec

The Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas y Certificación (ICONTEC), under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), certified Davivienda at the multilatin level, in all countries where it is present, as a carbon neutral organization, a result of its sustainable business strategy aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global objectives against climate change, reducing emissions associated with global warming.

In 2023 from the “Green Mission 2030” project, the financial institution carried out the estimation of the inventory of operational Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI) and its previous verification, establishing emission reduction plans which include strategies for energy efficiency and prevention, control and mitigation of the environmental impacts generated by GEI of its operation.

At Davivienda we work to take care of natural capital by promoting business initiatives that contribute to the protection, conservation, restoration and regeneration of ecosystems and resources, as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change, leading to a resilient and low-carbon economy with nature-positive results. We have made progress in becoming a carbon-neutral multi-Latin operation, and our next challenge is to help our customers decarbonize their operations.

The world is our home, let's make it more prosperous, inclusive, and green.

In line with the global climate goals of limiting global warming to between 1.5ºC and 2ºC and achieving the goal of zero net emissions by 2050, Davivienda, in addition to certifying its operation as carbon neutral, is committed to reducing its direct emissions by 5. 4% of its direct emissions by 2025, through actions related to the disconnection of non-vital loads, the renewal of air conditioners, the replacement of halogen lighting to LED, the efficient management of public services and the installation of solar panels; as well as strengthening the sustainable culture in its employees with its environmental leaders program, endorsed by the World Energy Council, and in its customers and suppliers to accompany them to finance and have better environmental practices.

With the implementation of this plan, Davivienda was able to offset 11,369 tons CO2eq, of which a significant amount of emissions segregation by country was achieved. In Colombia 4,922.37 tons of CO2e; in Costa Rica 371.67 tons of CO2e; in El Salvador 1,672.73 tons of CO2e; in Honduras: 4,256.05 tons of CO2e and Panama: 146.23 tons of CO2e.

This was possible through the planting of trees of native species and through the acquisition of carbon bonds and REC's (Renewable Energy Certificates), which also allowed us to obtain an additional recognition by ICONTEC: the recertification of the renewable energy seal for Colombia and for the first time for Central America.

Davivienda, which has operations in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador, is part of the same interconnected energy matrix of the region, thanks to this strategy and the support of key partners such as Excelergy, managed to obtain all Renewable Energy Certificates from the Aurinko project, a photovoltaic plant in the municipalities of La Libertad and San Matias in El Salvador. This project generates 19.2 GWh annually in a solar park distributed on a 15.8 hectare plot of land.

“These results reflect the efforts of all areas of our Bank and its subsidiaries in Central America, who are committed to carrying out all the environmental initiatives and strategies that allow us to reduce our emissions and position ourselves as a benchmark Bank in terms of sustainability. This achievement motivates us to continue our efforts to implement innovative strategies to protect natural resources and strengthen the environmental culture of our employees, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders”, said Reinaldo Romero Gómez, Davivienda International Executive Vice President.

Davivienda ratified its environmental commitment by joining the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and its Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), to guarantee our vision of being Net-Zero by 2050 in harmony with the closing of social gaps.

“At Davivienda we want to contribute to a more sustainable El Salvador. We are proud to be a Carbon Neutral organization and be agents of change from our management through our operations and culture, facing our value chains where we seek to continue accompanying our suppliers to be sustainable and through our businesses where we encourage our customers to adopt sustainable habits. We hope that we all join forces with a vision for the future and a commitment to contribute to the regeneration of the planet and make it a more prosperous, inclusive, and green place", said Gerardo Simán, president of Davivienda El Salvador.
