US$3.4 million recovered by the Defensoría del Consumidor in the first quarter of 2024

The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) revealed a report of results in the area of attention and resolution of complaints in favor of tens of thousands of salvadorans in defense of their rights and interests, in the period from january 1 to march 31, 2024.

US$3,426,280.99 recovered in favor of 10,365 consumers who filed consumer complaints with the Defensoría del Consumidor

86% of the amount recovered was concentrated in the following four sectors: financial services US$1.25 million; real estate US$1.19 million; tourism US$322,070; and household appliances, furniture and household goods US$167,080.

91% of the complaints resolved were due to breach of contract or offers, for more than US$1.45 million; improper charges, fees and commissions US$1.24 million; violation of the right of withdrawal and cancellation of purchase (US$314,200); and breach of warranty (US$115,610).

56% of the total amount recovered, US$1,902,281.83, corresponds to complaints closed with refunds in individual cases in favor of 4,799 consumers served at the Centros de Solución de Controversias (CSC) of the CD. The remaining 44% corresponded to collective cases for US$1,523,999.16, in the real estate, tourism and services sectors.

Another advance in the first quarter of 2024, is registered in the Sanctioning Court, which issued 60 resolutions for violations to the Consumer Protection Law (LPC), with the imposition of fines that together amounted to US$415,240.93; and ordered refunds for US$93,715.77 in favor of 41 consumers.
