Know the requirements to apply for tax exemption if you return to El Salvador

If you live abroad and wish to return to live in El Salvador, this information is for you; now with the Special Transitory Law of Incentives and Preferential Treatments Destined to Favor the Repatriation of Salvadorans, you can return to your country obtaining the benefit of tax exoneration for the introduction of your goods to El Salvador as long as it does not exceed the amount of US$70,000.00, Learn more about the Transitory Law by entering.

In order to initiate this procedure, you must sign an affidavit in person before an official of the General Directorate of Migration and Alien Affairs, institution empowered to register the address of the persons who will establish their domicile in the country, complying with the provisions of said Law.

These are the requirements you must meet:

  • Be salvadoran by birth or naturalization, in the latter case, provided that you have acquired the nationality prior to the entry into force of the Special Transitory Law; that is, before november 9, 2023.
  • To reside in any foreign country and to expressly state your intention to transfer your permanent domicile to El Salvador.
  • To subscribe in person at any of the border points, offices or branches of the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería a sworn statement, in which the address of your domicile that you will have in the country is established, as well as the modifications of the same.
  • Present your Documento Único de Identidad (DUI) with the updated address of your domicile in El Salvador.

The Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería will give you a photocopy of the affidavit of permanent domicile in El Salvador, which will be useful to carry out the customs procedures before the corresponding authorities.

Keep in mind that if you change your address during the validity of the Law, you will have 3 calendar days to notify Migration of your new place of residence within El Salvador, this change must be reported in any of our branches or in the different borders of the country, subscribing a new affidavit, which will contain the necessary modifications.

It is important that you keep in mind that these procedures are free of charge, but if you misplace the affidavit of address subscription or its modification, you must go to a border or branch of Migration for the certification of such document, paying the corresponding amount.
