CEL presents geothermal expansion projects to the world

Written by Evelyn Alas

The President of the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), Daniel Alvarez, participated in the 9th Geothermal Congress for Latin America and the Caribbean (GEOLAC), which began today in Mexico City and where all geothermal countries in the region participate, including key entities such as the World Bank and the International Geothermal Association (IGA).

During his speech, the head of the Commission told the world what El Salvador is doing to promote this type of generation, as it has through LAGEO with an installed capacity of 204 MW, renewable energy generated with its 2 plants, one located in Ahuachapán and another in the municipality of Berlin, Usulután.

"Our geothermal energy represents 25% of the energy consumed in El Salvador. We have great potential and not only because of the resource, but also because of the talent and knowledge of the people working in our subsidiary LAGEO", explained President Alvarez, during the first session of GEOLAC.

The official also revealed the ambitious geothermal expansion plan, which is already underway, with the construction of two more geothermal fields, one in San Vicente and the other in Chinameca, adding a total of 35 megawatts more to the national energy matrix, which will increase the participation of renewable energies in El Salvador.

According to LAGEO studies, this is only the first phase of several contemplated by the authorities, since there are studies and recent explorations that have revealed that the potential is 95 MW in our country.

The Expansion Plan is carried out through a BOT model (Build-Operate-Transfer) for the construction of the new geothermal plants, something that the recent reforms to the CEL Law and the Electricity Law endorse; therefore, an international tender was recently launched for expert companies in the construction of geothermal plants.

During the first session of GEOLAC, the head of CEL highlighted the broad geothermal knowledge that El Salvador has, proof of which is that in recent years more than 300 diploma courses have been given to both nationals and foreigners.

In fact, several countries have sought us to train them in different topics related to geothermal energy, said President Álvarez, who also assured the geothermal countries that thanks to the support of international organizations such as IRENA, El Salvador will soon have a first level Center of Studies, positioning the country as a reference in geothermal science education for Latin America and the Caribbean.
