The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), has delivered aid, consisting of agricultural inputs, to thousands of farmers, to maintain the projection of basic grains harvest and ensure food security for the population, despite the damage to crops left by tropical storm Julia.

The distribution of assistance to small producers, who partially or totally lost their crops, began on Wednesday in the cantons of Miraflores and Canoa de San Miguel, one of the places most affected by the floods caused by the climatic phenomenon.

Another area immediately attended was the irrigation district of Zapotitán, in La Libertad, where in addition to distributing aid among the affected producers, the areas cultivated with certified seeds, which will be delivered for next year's planting, were sprayed with agro-drones.

The aid delivered, and which continues to be distributed, consists of fungicides to be applied mainly to bean plots, which could be at risk of being lost due to the excess moisture left by the storm and subsequent rains.

The MAG confirmed that in order to deliver the aid, the 40 agricultural extension agencies throughout the country have been made available, as well as the technical assistance of their personnel to guide farmers on the use of these inputs.

The delivery of government assistance will continue until it reaches the last of the farmers who lost part or all of the cultivated land, confirmed the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Enrique Parada, who confirmed that for this purpose there is an allocation of US$26.9 million, of which $9 million, to be invested this year, have already begun to be executed.

In the case of coffee, deliveries were also made to small producers in Chinameca, San Miguel; La Palma, Chalatenango; Comasagua and other sectors of the Balsamo mountain range, in La Libertad and other coffee growing areas of the country. A total of 60,000 manzanas of crops that were mostly affected by the excess humidity will be attended, in order to avoid jeopardizing the harvest due to the proliferation of the fungus that causes rust.
