The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) and the Superintendencia de Competencia held a meeting with representatives of supermarkets and wholesale stores to address the issue of tax exemption of food tariffs.

Companies that do not comply with this measure and generate unjustified increases to 20 foods and inputs of the basic food basket will be sanctioned with fines of up to 500 minimum wages.

The objective of the meeting is to guarantee that the different sectors that import and commercialize products of the basic food basket and agricultural inputs pass on the benefit of the exoneration of tariffs to the population.

The President of the Defensoría, Ricardo Salazar, emphasized that the temporary elimination of these taxes generates new opportunities, and warned that the most important thing is that these benefits reach the population as soon as possible.

He pointed out that the measures being implemented seek to bring relief to the pockets of salvadorans and reiterated the call to the food sector entrepreneurs to support the implementation of these measures.

The superintendent of Competition, Gerardo Henríquez, said that with these measures, the costs of food of the basic food basket should go down and should be highly competitive.

The measure will help in the trade and supply chain to reduce production costs and streamline customs procedures in order to mitigate the effects of global inflation.
