Written by Evelyn Alas

The President of the Defensoría del Consumidor (DC), Ricardo Salazar, makes a tour in different gas stations in the western part of the country, to verify the temporary elimination of a percentage of taxes in the price of fuels.

In addition to verifying the elimination of the Fondo de Estabilización y Fomento Económico (FEFE) and the Contribución Especial al Transporte Público (COTRANS) in the price of gasoline, the reduction of a percentage of the Value Added Tax (VAT) in the final value of the product is determined.

The verifications are being carried out by personnel from the Dirección General de Hidrocarburos, Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII), Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) and the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC).

For special gasoline the VAT rate will be 4.75% and each gallon will cost US$4.31, for regular gasoline there will be a 5% reduction and the gallon will cost US$4.15, and for diesel the VAT discount will be 1.75% to US$4.14 per gallon.

According to the head of the DC, consumers will be able to see the tax exemption on their purchase invoice at each gas station of their choice. From this day until april 5 this measure will be maintained to benefit salvadorans.

Salazar stated that gas stations that do not comply with this measure may be sanctioned with a fine of up to US$100 thousand.

The President of the Defensoría said that any improper action salvadorans can denounce to the spaces that have been enabled WhatsApp 7844-1482 and telephone 910, to report non-compliance in the VAT reduction. Remember to demand the invoice in your fuel purchases.
