The Central Government will invest US$24 million in the RECETO program, which will provide 600 greenhouses and the irrigation technology system, with a 10-year guarantee. This project will generate self-sustainability and food self-sufficiency for the country.

The program started yesterday in the department of Chalatenango, where this strategy will benefit more than 860 horticulturists in the municipalities of San Ignacio and La Palma.

The RECETO program will be a generator and promoter of jobs, with an estimated 3,500 direct jobs and 18,000 indirect jobs, benefiting the 33 municipalities of Chalatenango with the execution of more works for the area.

This program seeks to achieve greater productivity and profitability of the vegetables most consumed by the population, among them cabbage, onion and tomato; therefore, it will benefit the vegetable growers of the upper zone of Chalatenango, La Palma and San Ignacio, with agile financing in favorable conditions for the farmer, technological innovations, agricultural inputs and specialized technical assistance in production and commercialization.

Also, the bet is to reduce the high levels of dependence on imports of agricultural products, especially in vegetables, since 92% of tomato production is imported, 42% of cabbage and 97% of onion.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock added that 100 greenhouses will have precision irrigation systems for controlled production and the horticulturists will have technical assistance from MAG extensionists and the Centro Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria y Forestal Enrique Álvarez Córdova (CENTA), as well as advice from israeli experts.
