Law approved to continue subsidizing gas consumed by the population

Written by Evelyn Alas

In order to continue guaranteeing the economic stability of salvadorans, the Legislative Assembly approved, with 80 votes, the Special and Transitory Law for the Stabilization of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Prices.

This regulation was approved by the legislators after last may, when another law, dating from 2021, which supported households in the consumption of liquefied petroleum gas, lost its validity.

The new regulatory framework contemplates a mechanism to grant a subsidy to consumers, through liquefied gas bottling companies that commercialize the product in portable cylinders.

The deputy of Nuevas Ideas, Samuel Martínez, explained that it was necessary to approve this law or, otherwise, citizens would have to pay more for the gas cylinder.

"Thanks to this decree, you will not have to pay more for the gas cylinder that, month after month, you consume in your home. The high prices are due to external factors; however, we have supported measures to reduce this impact", said the legislator.

Martínez reminded that these measures that benefit the population's pocket are the result of the coordinated work between the Government and the Legislative Assembly.

The Economy Commission, which ruled in favor of approving the regulation, listened to delegates from the Ministry of Finance, who explained that in order for families to receive the benefit, the resources of the price differences will be transferred to the bottling companies and they will maintain the rate paid by the population for the different presentations of gas cylinders.

Maricela de Guardado, parliamentarian of the cyan party, mentioned that this was one of the first measures adopted by President Nayib Buekele to face the escalation of prices in the international market.

"With the approval of the law we demonstrate that we are always working for the welfare of Salvadorans, so that their finances do not suffer an impact and enjoy the subsidy of liquefied gas", said Guardado.
