Basic food basket products will maintain affordable prices for the population

Written by Karla Gutiérrez

For the second consecutive time, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly extended, with 72 votes, the Special Transitory Law to Combat Inflation in the Prices of Basic Products.

The measure will remain in force until march 31, 2026, with the objective of alleviating the pockets of salvadorans in the face of world inflation and the high prices that this has generated in the basic food basket and other products of high demand.

The favorable opinion was studied by the Economy Commission, whose parliamentarians explained that the regulation eliminates the Derecho Arancelario a la Importación (DAI) to products such as milk, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, beans, meat, bananas, rice, flour, oils, vegetables, animal feed, fertilizers and fertilizers, different types of meat, chicken eggs and others to reduce the price of these products and make them accessible to the population.

Congresswoman Elisa Rosales recalled that this transitory law was approved, for the first time, in march 2022, with the purpose of stopping the impact that inflation may cause in the price of these consumer goods.

"It is very important that we approve this extension due to the fact that we have a Government that takes the necessary measures to protect the pocket of salvadoran families", said the parliamentarian.

She also pointed out that data from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) indicate that, since the first approval, El Salvador has achieved a 40% increase in imports of products that have been exempted from the DAI, which translates into $904.5 million that have been imported free of this tariff.

Congressman Rodrigo Ayala supported his colleague and assured that there has been an increase in imports of basic foodstuffs and articles such as animal feed or fertilizers to support national producers.

"The agricultural plans  promote domestic production; when we came to government we found it destroyed. As a measure to dynamize this area, we are attacking inflation", Ayala assured.

The legislator added that, in 2023, the market began to stabilize, and this has made it possible to guarantee access to these products.
