National marine shrimp ban begins to protect the species

Written by Evelyn Alas

This tuesday began the national marine shrimp ban at 12:00 noon, and ends on june 16 at the same time. The objective of this measure is to preserve the species.

During the ban industrial and artisanal fishermen are prohibited from extracting shrimp in the sea, gulf, bays and estuaries, but this does not mean no more consumption, shortage or increase in price, since there are options to eat fresh shrimp raised in the ponds of aquaculture farms or businesses that have declared inventories to the Centro Nacional para el Desarrollo de la Pesca y la Acuicultura (CENDEPESCA).

This tuesday, the national marine shrimp ban began at 12:00 noon and ends on june 16 at the same time. The objective of this measure is to preserve the species.

During the closed season, industrial and artisanal fishermen are prohibited from extracting shrimp from the sea, gulf, bays and estuaries, but this does not mean no more consumption, shortages or price increases, as there are options to eat fresh shrimp raised in the ponds of aquaculture farms or businesses that have declared inventories to the National Center for the Centro Nacional para el Desarrollo de la Pesca y la Acuicultura (CENDEPESCA).

"The consumption of shrimp is not prohibited, because the stores are supplied; they are also obliged to lend their inventories before may 4 to guarantee that their fishing was legal", clarified the minister of Agriculture, Oscar Enrique Guardado.

After technical studies, CENDEPESCA has determined that april to june is the main reproduction season, so it is necessary to temporarily suspend its extraction, as a measure to manage hydrobiological resources.

The director of CENDEPESCA, Edgar Palacios, assured that according to the evaluations of the shrimp resource, this fishery is in a condition of overexploitation due to different factors, leading to a decrease in production of up to 89%, since the 1960s, with annual catches of 2,000 tons, until reaching the point of only 225 tons of catches in 2022.

For any complaints of non-compliance with the ban, people can call 2210-1915 or any CENDEPESCA agency. Those who do not comply with the measure will receive the respective sanctions ranging from 20 to 50 minimum wages.
