Salvadorans will not see price increases in electricity prices for three months

Written by Evelyn Alas

The price of energy will remain without increases for the next three months, this was announced by President Nayib Bukele, through his Twitter account, to prevent households from being affected by increases in the international market.

The second tariff adjustment of the year was scheduled for this april, according to the regulations of the General Electricity Law. One of the most influential elements for the calculation of tariffs is the price per megawatt per hour (MW/h), which has risen up to 89% compared to last year. This predicted a significant increase in the price of this service.

However, since march, President Bukele ordered that end users should not bear the increase, but that the Government should assume it.

According to the Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones (SIGET), in compliance with the President's order, they announced that the price of energy will not vary for the next three months, benefiting the salvadoran population.

This provision of the President responds to the 11 Measures against World Inflation that he implemented last month to protect the population from the trend of high prices in the international market.

The head of the Ministerio de Economía (MINEC), María Luisa Hayem, celebrated that the stabilization of the energy tariff is in force, so the institution will be implementing measures to alleviate the pocket of salvadorans.
