Carriers say freight rates will go up

Written by Evelyn Alas

The President of the Asociación de Transportes de Carga, ASTIC, Raul Alfaro, pointed out that despite the measures taken in order to reduce the prices of the basic food basket, the transportation of the same could increase prices.

Alfaro points out that the price of diesel continues to be high, the reduction in the price of what they invest to pay for their business has not been seen to a greater extent, so they would have to transfer those costs.

He said that the discount is only 10 cents on the price of diesel and a part of the VAT (Value Added Tax), which, although it helps, is not enough to not transfer the prices to the goods they transport daily, he says not unaware that the increases in fuel prices are international, they announce that freight will have to suffer increases, because they are unsustainable.

He also points out that there is an important element, they have price tables and diesel is already in the last price scale, therefore, the freight must go up.

The President of ASTIC indicated that also a problem that comes to aggravate the situation is the delay in the borders where the documentation is delayed, they need agility in order not to spend more in fuel for the wait.

He said that the increases will depend on the increases that diesel is experiencing internationally.

He also said that if the freight increases US$0.25 per gallon of US$80, US$90, US$100, US$110, US$120, US$200 and US$400, these amounts are multiplied and a new rate is calculated.
