Corn was the most affected crop, since the production projection expected to generate approximately 15 million quintals, but only a little more than 12 million were generated, for an annual consumption of 18 million quintals, the grain had a deficit of around 6 million quintals, generating a loss of US$59 million 960 thousand 441.
Beans had an estimated production projection of 2,150,430 quintals, obtaining only 1,848,280, for an annual consumption of 2,400,000 quintals needed, there was a deficit of 551,720 quintals, generating losses in beans of US$22,697,132 million.
The Niño phenomenon caused a severe period of drought, tropical storm Pilar and the drop in productivity did not allow small and medium-sized agricultural producers to see the season as a window of opportunity to revalue agriculture, livestock, fisheries and rural areas.
The agrifood problem that threatens all countries worldwide, and mainly those countries dependent on food imports, as is the case of El Salvador, are some of the factors that put at risk the sovereignty and food security of the population.
Despite the aforementioned, agricultural activity still represents one of the main sectors in terms of employment generation in El Salvador and these losses represent a large negative percentage in the last agricultural cycle.
