United States and El Salvador strengthen commercial alliances

Under Secretary of International Trade, Marisa Lago, concluded her visit to El Salvador by participating in a joint statement with the Minister of Economy, Maria Luisa Hayem, to highlight the shared commitment to continue working towards an appropriate regulatory environment to attract foreign direct investment.

 

 

"The United States and El Salvador seek to collaborate to realize El Salvador's aspirations to become a regional technology hub through the pursuit of a sound digital regulatory environment and improving the overall business climate", the Undersecretary said in the statement.

Ms. Lago visited El Salvador with the objective of strengthening trade partnerships between the United States and El Salvador. During her three-day stay in the country, the Under Secretary had successful meetings with representatives of the salvadoran government and private enterprise in which she discussed how the United States can contribute to efforts to increase direct investment in the country and support the work of developing a digital policy in support of El Salvador's goal of becoming a regional technology hub.

During her visit, Undersecretary Lago participated in a roundtable discussion with representatives of U.S. technology companies to evaluate alternatives to strengthen and promote the exchange of innovation and technology initiatives between U.S. and El Salvador companies.

Subsequently, Ms. Lago participated in a workshop on cybersecurity, data protection, cloud use and connectivity with experts from across the region and the United States.

Likewise, Undersecretary Lago met with Manuel Aguilera, Superintendente de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones (SIGET), to learn first-hand about the efforts being made by El Salvador to access the full potential of wi-fi technology, which is an engine for innovation, increases rural and regional connectivity and fosters job creation and the future of the digital economy.

She also visited the Ternova plant to learn about the efforts of this innovative salvadoran company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through modern recycling processes.

Also during her visit, AMCHAM and members of the Consejo Empresarial para América Latina (CEAL) received Mrs. Lago and had the opportunity to discuss economic challenges and how the United States can support their efforts to generate more investment opportunities in El Salvador.

On her last day in El Salvador, Ms. Lago concluded her visit to the country with a meeting with the Secretary of Trade and Investment, Miguel Kattan, where they discussed how trade facilitation is key to creating an attractive business climate and creating jobs.

Ms. Lago's arrival in El Salvador is part of a regional visit to strengthen bilateral relations, encourage increased trade and investment, strengthen the business environment and promote U.S. business solutions for digital opportunities in Latin America. Undersecretary Lago departed this friday for Costa Rica, the third country on her tour of the region.
