DELSUR seeks to reduce the gender gap with educational programs

The company DELSUR is characterized by bringing progress in the territories where it operates, and ensuring its purpose as a business group, which is "Contributing to the harmony of life for a better world". They are currently present in 79 municipalities in the country, generating development and sustainability in the operation, maintaining a balance in economic, social and environmental.

During 2021, a strategic alliance was also established with the organization Plan International to execute the "Educatech" Project, which aims to motivate more girls and young women to study technical careers in the sector and STEM (science, technology, mathematics and engineering), in order to increase the number of women who meet the skills required to perform technical work in the electricity sector. Through this initiative, more than 3,000 girls and 54 teachers will be trained in STEM skills and 7,000 parents will be sensitized in 18 schools in the Department of La Libertad.

As an organization and as a result of its participation in the USAID Engendering Utilities Project, DELSUR has a business equity plan with medium-term indicators to reduce the gender gap internally, improving hiring processes, attracting talent, and promoting work-family balance, and the promotion of work-family balance. The company has a Gender Equity Committee made up of representatives from different areas of the company who monitor the activities included in the plan on a monthly basis.

The presentation of the projects to be executed in 2021 and 2022, of the “Equidad para el Progreso”, program, an event in which important allies in the management participate such as the General Superintendent of Electricity and Communications: Manuel Aguilar, the Resident Representative of UN Women: Ana Elena Badilla, the President of ETESAL: Edwin Núñez, Executive Secretary of CNE: Salvador Handal, Congresswoman and President of the Women's Commission: Alexia Rivas, representatives of the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Education, La Geo, CEL, AMCHAM, FUNDEMAS, among others.

In addition and with a global participation, Plan International Switzerland triples the economic contribution in order to reach the same number of adolescents.

At the beginning of the year, DELSUR received a grant from USAID to lead the execution of a sectoral study to determine the current status and future prospects for gender equity in the Salvadoran electricity sector. This effort will allow the sector to update data on the number of women currently working in the sector; identify gaps and articulate efforts to achieve a sectoral roadmap.

Since 2018, DELSUR assumed the commitment to gender equity as one of its main Sustainability commitments. In 2021, with a holistic and strategic vision, it has identified the opportunity in reducing the gender gap by increasing the number of women performing technical roles as one of the greatest challenges for the sector.

In November 2020, DELSUR became one of the first companies in El Salvador to adhere to the WEPs promoted by UN Women. The seven principles that comprise the WEPs contribute to the reduction of the gender gap within the company.
