The importance of services for data center sustainability

Written by Evelyn Alas

In september 2021, Omdia's Vlad Galabov discussed the importance of services for data center owners and operators looking to improve efficiency in their operations with Michael Okeeffe, vice president of services at Vertiv EMEA for a quick chat on data center insights.

Below is the transcript of this conversation.

How do data center services address operational efficiency?

Vlad: Hi, welcome to this Data Center Insights Quick Chat sponsored by Omdia. My name is Vlad Galabov and I'm the head of data center research here at Omdia. Today, together with Michael Okeeffe, VP of Services for Vertiv EMEA, we will talk about data center services, what they mean and how they can help operators.

Well, Michael, we kick off the conversation with a question that seems to be close to many people's hearts. Every year, we survey about 6,000 decision makers and this year, they indicated that operational efficiency was the number one concern.

So how do data center services address operational efficiency?

Michael: Hi Vlad! Thanks for the opportunity to be here. Generally, our services have been based on risk and risk management, and site reliability and resiliency, these types of activities.

However, nowadays every conversation has an element of sustainability and this has contributed with the evolution of our services business over the last few years. So it's about sites and site design, minimum energy consumption/maximum efficiency, both at the equipment level and at the design level, and then it has to do with services for ongoing review throughout the lifecycle at the site.

We can have internal monitoring. We can design a site digitally. We can look at temperature. We can look at air flows. We can take the commissioning data as a reference and we'll use the design parameters and compare them throughout the life cycle of the site. And as the loads increase/decrease, we continually review the energy consumption of the site and develop our services accordingly.

So I would say we used to be a project company with a break-fix service, like many traditional manufacturers in the past, and now we've moved into broader operational support services.
