Banco Promerica El Salvador and Guatemala sign the United Nations Principles of Responsible Banking

Written by Evelyn Alas

Banco Promerica El Salvador and Banco Promerica Guatemala, in order to reiterate their commitment to promote social welfare and protect the planet, have become official signatories of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Banking.

The UN Principles of Responsible Banking represent a unique context for the sustainable banking industry, developed through a partnership between banks around the world and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

The Principles are the fundamental framework to ensure that banks' strategy and practice can be aligned with the vision society has set for its future, within the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.

The banks that have signed this document commit to being ambitious in their sustainability strategies, working to prioritize and integrate sustainability into the heart of their business, while enabling them to remain at the forefront of sustainable finance.

Following the agreement, signatory banks measure the environmental and social impact resulting from their business activities, set and implement targets where they will have the most significant impact, and will publicly report on their progress on a regular basis. The United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking provide a framework for banks to systematically understand the risks and take advantage of the opportunities arising from the transition to more sustainable economies.

"At Banco Promerica, we are proud to be a signatory member of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking. We believe that our responsibility is not only to our account holders, but also to the community in which we are immersed. This step allows us to move forward and lead the institution to an integral future - economically, socially and environmentally", Edgar Bran, general manager of Banco Promerica Guatemala, said.

Principles signatory banks take a leadership role, demonstrating how banking products, services and relationships can support and accelerate the changes needed to achieve shared prosperity for current and future generations, building a positive future for both people and the planet.

Participants also join the world's largest global banking community focused on sustainable finance; sharing best practices and working together on practical guidance and pioneering tools that benefit the entire industry.

"At Banco Promerica we believe that financing sustainability is guaranteeing the future of new generations. We are a Group that seeks to achieve a positive impact by offering a portfolio of products and social investments in our communities that generate a balance between social equity, environmental viability, and economic development in a sustainable manner. The signing of the Principles of Responsible Banking with UNEP FI is a reflection of our commitment to incorporate sustainability as a strategic priority, thus providing long-term value for our clients, employees, shareholders and society in general", Lázaro Figueroa, CEO of Banco Promerica El Salvador, said.

This is a journey of unprecedented scale and scope at a time when such ambition is urgently needed to address the major planetary crises of climate change, loss of nature, pollution and social problems.

Together these collective efforts will ensure that profitability goes hand in hand with a sense of purpose.

"We are convinced that together, as a Group, we will make a difference in the region by ensuring that the institution's objectives are aligned with being a sustainability-oriented bank and thus contribute to a positive future, both for our clients and for the world in which we live", said Ramiro Ortiz Gurdian, CEO of Grupo Promerica.
