Walmart donated US$26 thousand in food to Banco de Alimentos de El Salvador

In the framework of World Food Day, celebrated on October 16, Walmart, together with a group of its suppliers, carried out the "Impacto Colectivo por la Alimentación", Campaign, which consists of joining efforts to make a donation in kind, according to their business area, to the region's Food Banks.

Walmart de México y Centroamérica suppliers that are part of the initiative in El Salvador are: Grupo Bimbo, Alimentos Prosalud, CRIO and Kellogg's.

Walmart and its suppliers seek to contribute to the goal of 'Zero Hunger', whose goal is to put an end to hunger in the world by 2030 and is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

"Once again Walmart together with several of our suppliers have joined efforts to generate a positive impact in the communities through the donation of staple foods. On this occasion, the companies are providing a contribution of more than US$26,000 that will be of great help to many families that are served through the Banco de Alimentos", said Claudia de lbáñez, Walmart's Deputy Director of Growth Support.

The donated kilograms of food will be distributed in the communities thanks to the support and distribution of the Asociación Civil Alimentos Solidarios de El Salvador "We want to thank Walmart and its suppliers for carrying out this campaign and for supporting the Banco de Alimentos de El Salvador, since the delivery of this donation will benefit families that have been affected even more by this pandemic of Covid-19", Enrique Araujo, President of Banco de Alimentos El Salvador, said. The Food Bank program is administered in El Salvador by Asociación Civil Alimentos Solidarios.

Founded in 2013, the Banco de Alimentos is a non-profit entity, which aims to collect, select and distribute perishable and non-perishable food to low-income communities in El Salvador.

It also aims to defend, encourage and promote good nutrition for the most vulnerable people.

The institution currently benefits 15,735 salvadorans through 43 foundations, nursing homes, churches, communities and associations. To this end, it receives support from several companies such as Kellogg's and Walmart that have shown concern for the high levels of malnutrition. Since 2013, Walmart has donated 2,131,504 lbs in food products, which is equivalent to US$2,239,276.

Other Walmart actions in El Salvador to benefit the Banco de Alimentos include the donation of US$50 thousand for the construction of the Food Bank's warehouse and a pick up to ensure proper handling of products. This year, the company allocated US$27,991.91 for the construction of the cold room to implement the donation of perishables, as part of its "0" waste plan.

It is estimated that between 720 and 811 million people in the world suffered from hunger in 2020, according to the study The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021 of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Hunger is a problem that severely affects Central America and the world. In 2020, 9.9% of the world's population suffered from hunger, as well as 10.6% of Central Americans.

In Central America, 20 million people suffered from severe food insecurity. In addition, 67 million Central Americans were unable to access sufficient safe and nutritious food for adequate growth and development. This phenomenon, known as moderate or severe food insecurity, was experienced by more than 2.3 billion people worldwide in 2020.

In the case of children under 5 years of age, 149 million were stunted, 45 million experienced excessive thinness and 39 million were overweight.
