PedidosYa implements three projects to fight hunger in the region

Written by Leydin Sorto

According to the Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO),  the importance of reducing food loss and waste becomes evident when we look at how much food is wasted in people's daily lives. In Latin America, it is estimated that around 15% of the food available in homes, stores and supermarkets, as well as in greengrocers and other places, is discarded as garbage.

This figure is alarming, especially when one considers that 47 million people in the region do not have a guaranteed plate of food at the end of the day. What is surprising is that the food discarded in supermarkets, fairs, warehouses and other retail outlets alone could feed more than 30 million people, equivalent to 64% of those suffering from hunger in the region.

In the framework of the "International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day", PedidosYa, the leading delivery and quick-commerce technology company in Latin America, reaffirms its commitment against this problem by implementing a series of initiatives aimed at promoting food safety in the region. Its objective is to contribute to ensuring that all people have access to safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs, allowing them to lead a healthy life.

In this context, PedidosYa has made a firm commitment to be part of the solution, and implements various initiatives including:

1. food rescue and donation on PedidosYa Markets (100% online):

Uses technology to optimize the distribution and marketing of products. Thus, the inventory rotates among the digital supermarkets, "PedidosYa Market", to avoid the loss and waste of food.

In addition, those products that lose their commercial value but are still fit for consumption, are delivered to different organizations dedicated to the fight against hunger in the region, such as the different food banks that make up The Global Foodbanking Network, in the case of El Salvador, all products go directly to the Banco de alimentos.

Thus, these donations become a plate of food for those who need it most and reduce the amount of food that ends up in the garbage. To date, food has been rescued and donated in 119 stores in 11 Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia and El Salvador.

2. Share button:

PedidosYa turned on the "Share Button," a technological solution that allows people using the application to donate plates of food to social organizations fighting hunger in the region. This makes it possible to contribute to food security without the need to make a purchase. In addition, it has been activated for emergencies and climatic catastrophes, allowing people to provide rapid support in times of crisis.

Currently, the Comparte Button is active in 14 of the 15 countries where the company operates, making it the solution with the largest presence for food donations throughout the region.

Since 2022, PedidosYa El Salvador has the "Share Button" and all donations received are transferred directly to the Banco de alimentos.

Volunteer Mode:

The internal program "#ModoVoluntariado" seeks to involve people working in the company in social and environmental causes. In partnership with Global Foodbanking Network and the y Banco de Alimentos, the team participates in food sorting and repackaging activities, giving them a new useful life and contributing to the fight against food insecurity.

To date, more than 17 volunteer activities have been carried out in 12 Latin American countries.

"At PedidosYa we have a shared dream: to create a more sustainable business ecosystem. To do so, we continue to create solutions - products and services - that improve people's quality of life while helping to regenerate the ecosystems we inhabit", Germán Perez Suarez, Sustainability manager.

Thanks to the implementation of these initiatives, more than 1.5 million plates of food have been donated to date in Latin America, contributing significantly to a more sustainable and secure future for society. PedidosYa demonstrates that it is possible to establish a business model in which the company's responsibilities are not limited only to its commercial operations, but also include a solid commitment to generate positive social and environmental impact in the region.
