For La Constancia "Sustainability is not part of the business, it is their business"

Written by Coralia Cuellar

La Constancia is a centenary company that, thanks to its experience and potential, is influencing salvadoran society by providing opportunities to empower women in the workplace, taking care of green spaces in San Salvador, supporting entrepreneurship; among other things.

La Constancia is a company that, being a centenary and with a strong heritage for its trajectory, always works at the forefront, innovating, with an entrepreneurial spirit to move its customers, suppliers, communities and collaborators to progress and "dreams big" to work towards the progress of El Salvador.

That is why it is a company recognized nationally for its capacity and experience in innovation and business. It has used these elements to its advantage in order to influence the creation of a sustainability system that ensures a pleasant future for new generations.

On the employability , La Constancia has bet on youth by providing opportunities for more than 300 young people to have their first job opportunity, in a healthy environment, in which they are assured employment benefits that have been recognized by the Ministry of Labor through the Decent Work 2022 award.

La Constancia is aware of the diverse labor gaps that exist in the country, so the doors of the institution are open to people of different origins, ages, and beliefs.

Women also have their space assured in the company, where strategic alliances have been made with other companies and organizations in order to ensure a living wage for female workers, as well as opportunities for job growth in an environment free of violence, where any kind of harassment of female employees is condemned; that is why they were the ones who started for the first time in El Salvador the "Alliance for the Inclusion and Employability of Women".

The above is in line with the objectives of the United Nations (UN) 2030 agenda, which in its sections 5, 8 and 10 speak about gender equality in the fields of education and work, together with the search for all people to have a decent job, with which to eradicate poverty in the world in the coming years.

La Constancia's customers are not left out of the efforts to achieve a better society. With this objective in mind, initiatives have been created with the goal of supporting more than 60 thousand customers, owners of stores, canteens and pupuserías.

So much so, that La Constancia is one of the leaders in the movement of progress of entrepreneurs, leading to sign an alliance with the Cámara Salvadoreña de Tecnología de la Información y Comunicación (CASATIC) to support and promote the ecosystem of entrepreneurship and startups in El Salvador, which will benefit small entrepreneurs in the use and creation of digital tools that facilitate their daily work of their businesses.

"At La Constancia we believe in the capacity of our entrepreneurs and we can also make a positive impact through these efforts that we carry out together with strategic allies. We are the first MacroEntrepreneurial company in the country because we execute local development and generate a positive change in the lives of our customers and entrepreneurs in general. We are a company with a legendary legacy, but we are as innovative as we are avant-garde, bringing futuristic changes in an agile way, as any entrepreneur would do", said Carol Colorado, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director of La Constancia.

However, to achieve a better future it is necessary to take care of the environment and La Constancia has become a key player in the protection of important green areas in the San Salvador volcano. The project that has been developed to achieve this commitment is called "ISKALI", which in the Nahuatl language means: to heal, recover and resurface.

This project consists of a 5-year plan that focuses on the restoration of 15,905 hectares of ecosystems and landscapes of the San Salvador volcano, and to achieve this, a final investment of US$13.5 million will be made.

This mobilization of funds and efforts began with a diagnostic study of priority areas in 2019, which defined three main lines of action: sustainable agriculture, restoration and conservation of ecosystems and impact on protected areas. In addition, there is an effort to reforest and protect local tree and plant species.

La Constancia also carries out activities of planting native vegetation. In 2022, a group of allies carried out a reforestation day in vulnerable and degraded areas in the area of the El Saigon Community in Nejapa.

During the day, more than 250 plants were planted with the support of volunteers, who were dedicated to preparing the land, preparing holes for planting, moving the trees and planting them, to leave an important footprint in the area.

The recovery of these green spaces in the central area of the country, are necessary for the absorption of large amounts of CO2, which would support the climate regulation of the metropolitan area of the capital, in addition to caring for the habitat of hundreds of species that inhabit the different green spaces of San Salvador and La Libertad.

By 2025, the ISKALI initiative expects to have restored a total of 15,905 hectares of ecosystems and to have benefited more than 14,000 people with agricultural and social projects in the area.

But the above is only part of the work required for the company to achieve the title of Carbon Neutral, which is when CO2 emissions are reduced to zero during the production of its products.

That is why La Constancia has taken an important step in the creation of its consumables, since its soft drinks and beers are produced with solar energy, which considerably reduces the carbon footprint emitted in the production plants.

This is only a part of all that La Constancia has done for society, however, the company reaffirms its commitment to have a future to offer and for that it will continue to strive to strengthen its projects that will undoubtedly have a great impact on the lives of millions of salvadorans.
