Walmart through its “Sin Bolsas” program during 2023 stopped circulating 55 million plastic bags, the equivalent of 261 thousand kilograms of virgin plastic. In other words, it avoided the consumption of 4,260 barrels of oil. This is part of its sustainability project.

Walmart works with strong plans to lead as a Regenerative Company in Central America, for which we developed an agenda that transcends the preservation of the planet in an effort to restore, renew and replenish natural resources and for the benefit of the communities where we operate.

Our regenerative strategy is based on 4 fundamental pillars: Climate Change, Nature, Waste and Community.

"We are talking about 2050, 2030, 2040, we are thinking about the goals we want to achieve by then, from where we can be impacting not only locally, but globally. So now our purpose is rather guiding our goals and also the new strategy we have is, our purpose is to save money for families so they can live better and to be able to positively impact the communities and society where we are operating", said Claudia Ibañez, Deputy Regional Director of Corporate Affairs Growth Support for Walmart El Salvador.

In addition, its distribution centers have renewable energy generation systems and in 2023 they generated 711 megawatt hours through solar panels, which is equivalent to the consumption of 212 salvadoran homes for a year, avoiding the emission of 68 tons of greenhouse gases. More than 95% of the stores have LED lighting, which helps save 30% of energy.

The origin of raw materials is also a priority in the regenerativity strategy. Walmart works with its private label suppliers to ensure that materials come from 100% certified sustainable sources and that they use 100% recyclable, compostable or reusable packaging or packaging with post-consumer recycled plastic.

For example, Walmart's private label paper towels and napkins are made from 100% recycled paper pulp and 96% of its palm oil products come from certified sustainable production farms.

The company is one of the main sponsors of food banks in the region in keeping with its zero waste policy. In 2021, it donated more than 5,900 tons of food to these institutions.
