The most recent volunteer day was held for the benefit of the community of El Zonte, La Libertad, and consisted of three actions: cleaning the El Zonte river that flows into the beach, painting a mural, and giving recycling talks to students at the Centro Escolar El Zonte, benefiting 700 people in the area.
“At Walmart we continue working to preserve and restore the planet for a better life. On this occasion, we are developing a volunteer program together with our Ternova allies, executing activities to positively impact the El Zonte school and community”, said Sandra Cáceres, Corporate Affairs Coordinator for Walmart in El Salvador. Some of the associates who participated in the volunteer program were previously trained in a training to share their knowledge and experiences in a recycling talk that was held at the Centro Escolar El Zonte with the objective of reinforcing the school's recycling program.
The volunteering was carried out in partnership with Ternova through its initiative Recicla 503. They have influence in the area thanks to the alliances established with businesses, educational institutions, the association El Zonte Lindo and international entities such as the German Cooperation GIZ, with whom we have placed a separation station for recyclable materials in El Zonte to encourage the community to adopt the culture of the circular economy and the foreigners who visit the area to be part of the progress that the country has made in waste management.
During the cleanup of the El Zonte River, 300 pounds of common garbage and 50 pounds of recyclable materials were collected, and with the support of the students we collected 700 pounds of recyclable materials from local homes, thus preventing them from reaching the sea. Walmart plans to continue with all its efforts in environmental sustainability for the coming decades, thus making its commitment to become a carbon neutral company by the year 2040 a reality.
