CMI promotes clean energy generation through waste from its restaurants

Written by Miguel Crespin

Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI), in alliance with Puma Energy, is working to transform the waste generated by the multilatina's restaurants, such as Pollo Campero and Don Pollo, into clean energy known as biodiesel.

The objective of this alliance is to promote sustainability and the circular economy, which consists of sharing, renting, repairing, renewing and recycling waste materials as many times as possible and thus extending their usefulness as much as possible to avoid damaging the environment.

CMI's food group has arranged for food establishments to deliver their waste vegetable oil and burnt lard to Puma Energy's trucks, which collect the material for storage in a special location for treatment. At present, oil and lard are collected from all Pollo Campero's 72 restaurants and almost 40% of Don Pollo's 75 outlets, with more being added every month.

It is estimated that 38 tons of residual materials are stored monthly, which are processed and then transported and exported to the United States and Europe. To date, 162 tons of oil and lard have been transported out of the country to be transformed into biodiesel.

This fuel also has other uses apart from running diesel engines and vehicles; some of them are: fuel for domestic kitchens, fuel for heating systems and industrial solvent or lubricant.

"From CMI we want to contribute to the care of the planet, for this and future generations. Therefore, we manage waste such as vegetable oils and fats through allies such as Puma Energy, who export them to the United States and Europe to be transformed into biodiesel. In an innovative way and with actions such as these, we demonstrate our commitment to sustainable development with an impact on people, families and communities", said Maira Serrano, CMI Alimentos Environmental Management manager.

With these activities we seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to giving an economic value to waste so that it can continue to be useful to all people.
