Ministry of Finance filed 8 new notices of presumed tax evasion for US$16.1 million

The minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, filed 8 new notices for alleged tax evasion before the Directorate for the Dirección de Defensa de los Intereses del Estado, accumulating a value of US$16.1 million.

One of the cases presented corresponds to a natural person dedicated to the retail of fruits and vegetables that presented false information to the Internal Revenue Service, according to minister Zelaya.

"We had presented this notice in the past and the case had not been followed up. Now we are working in coordination with the Directorate for the Defense of State Interests of the Attorney General's Office", said the minister.

The new notices filed pertain to these economic activities:

  • Municipalities
  • Sale of fruits and vegetables
  • Telecommunications
  • Outsourcing
  • Leasing of real estate and personal property
  • Private security services
  • Civil engineering services

"We do not pursue businessmen, we pursue tax evaders. The good businessman is a friend of the Ministry of Finance and those who have problems, can approach to fulfill their obligations", said the minister of Finance.

Another of the notices was of a company dedicated to the provision of outsourcing payroll administration services, which has allegedly evaded a total of US$4.6 million. In addition, the official highlighted that a company dedicated to the provision of engineering services is alleged to have evaded US$3.9 million in 2018.

With the notices filed in this se, they accumulate 97 cases referred to the Fiscalía General de la República de El Salvador (FGR) which add up to approximately US$90.5 million between taxes and fines.
