Energy prices increase halted and 5% reduction approved

Written by Coralia Cuellar

The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) presented to the Legislative Assembly the proposed decree with transitory provisions to reduce the electric rate by 14%.

The transitory decree was approved by the deputies of the Legislative Assembly with 72 votes and will be retroactively effective as of october 15 and will be in force until april 14, 2024, and will benefit more than 2 million users.

This will be possible thanks to the recent inauguration of the 3 de febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in the municipality of San Luis La Reina, in San Miguel, which will strengthen the energy matrix.

"The recently inaugurated 3 de febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant will allow reducing the electricity tariff, because it will inject more renewable resources to the national matrix. We will be paying 14% less thanks to the initiative of our President Nayib Bukele and to the fact that the 3 de febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant is already operating", expressed the president of CEL, Daniel Álvarez.

The measure was announced at a critical moment, since the whole world is experiencing an increase in the price of hydrocarbons, fuels and electric energy. In addition, the country has been affected due to the low hydroelectric generation, as a result of the low rainfall this year.

The Government maintains its efforts to promote more renewable energy projects, so that the country depends less on hydrocarbons and more on natural resources, with the purpose that El Salvador's energy matrix becomes, in a short term, 100% clean.
