Savings tips for large families

Written by Evelyn Alas

Large families use a variety of strategies to save and live better. Optimizing, prioritizing and choosing expenses is key.

1. Organize joint purchases: Products that are sold by quantity or by closed pack containing several units are usually offered at cheaper prices than per unit. For this reason, joint purchases among several families are a great option to save on consumer goods.

2. Shop with a weekly list: Make an inventory of what you have at home and a list of the items you will need each week. Then, do your shopping based on those two pieces of information. It is not advisable to overbuy, since that surplus is used at the end, when in fact it was not calculated as necessary for the week.

It is only recommended to buy surplus when an excellent bargain is found and only for items that can be stockpiled, such as toilet paper, kitchen rolls or laundry soap.

3. Plan an annual budget: Making an annual planning is more efficient to be able to cover the punctual expenses that respond to events such as the beginning of classes, a birthday, vacations or Christmas parties.

The secret is to save in the months with fewer expenses and reserve those resources for special events. In this way, you achieve a balance in your budget throughout the year and you don't have to go into debt to cover those extra expenses.

4. Take advantage of offers and second-hand items: For daily consumption products, it is advisable to follow the offers offered by stores and supermarkets which, in many cases, are scheduled by days or weeks. In addition, for fruits and vegetables, take advantage of the seasonal ones, which are always much cheaper.
