The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC), presented a report of results of the ''National Price Verification Plan'', in which possible cases of price increase to products of the basic food basket were found.

The report identifies that after 44 days of verification from last july to august 13, the Defensoría del Consumidor has found 43 cases with indications of price increases in some products of the basic food basket, for example, in: eggs, oil, powdered milk, chicken meat, tomatoes, corn flour, bottled water, cream and sausages.

The Defensoría del Consumidor carries out inspections and verifications to establishments such as supermarkets, wholesale stores, municipal markets, pharmacies, agroservices and convenience stores, making a total of 91,554 price records and 1,474 establishments visited.

The president of the Defensoría del Consumidor Ricardo Salazar, said that the deployment is maintained in different points of the country, in order to preserve the purchasing power of the population, before, during and after the minimum wage increase comes into effect.

This verification deployment is due to the fact that within the framework of the 20% increase in the minimum wage, different establishments increased the prices of their products and this plan will prevent undue increases from affecting the pockets of salvadorans.

Likewise, the Ley de Protección al Consumidor (LPC), prohibits the use of maneuvers or artifices to achieve unjustified price increases of basic necessities, which constitutes a very serious infraction, which may be sanctioned with a fine of 500 minimum wages, according to art. 18 literal h, in relation to art. 44, literal e, of the LPC.
