Construction of the first overpass in the east of the country is in its final stage

Written by Evelyn Alas

With the Gerardo Barrios peripheral road project in San Miguel, several overpasses and 17 kilometers of road are being built that will help families to move in an agile and safe way.

This mega project, 21 kilometers long in total, is being built with an investment of $160 million, in four packages, the first one already completed and enabled, and the remaining three are currently under construction.

The construction of the bypass will save travel time and costs and will have a significant impact on regional and national socioeconomic activities. One of the main works included in this project is the first overpass in the eastern part of the country, which is already in its final stage of construction.

It is 95% complete. Only the last layer of asphalt and paint is still to be laid. This infrastructure will have two lanes in each direction, and will be located in the area of Quelepa, San Miguel.

Soon, families in the eastern part of the country will be able to travel safely through this overpass. This work is part of package two of the Gerardo Barrios peripheral road project.

Package two also consists of the widening from 2 to 4 lanes from El Obrajuelo, kilometer 131.77 of the existing Panamericana Highway to Hato Nuevo, 200 meters before the intersection with the road to Gotera. It has a length of 8.39 kilometers.

It will be built with an investment of US$50.5 million and includes return roads with underpasses, intersections, bicycle lanes, and the construction of a drainage system. The paving of the total section of this package is 50% complete and is expected to be completed by the end of may.

Packages three and four are also progressing and consist of the construction of two major bridges and the construction of a 7.22 kilometer stretch of road. The new road will run through three municipalities: Moncagua, Quelepa and San Miguel and will benefit the entire eastern part of the country.
