Prices of fruits and vegetables remain on the rise

Written by Evelyn Alas

In the Santa Tecla market, fruit and vegetable merchants have stated that pineapples, oranges, lemons and cucumbers have experienced an increase in their prices, something that affects the pocket of sellers.

One vendor said that a box of pineapple used to cost US$8.00 and now it is going up to US$11.00, and that the price also varies depending on the quality and size of the product.

As for oranges, they used to cost US$5.00 per hundred and now it is US$12.00 or more. Added to this increase are vegetables such as onions, green beans and lettuce.

A pound of green beans used to cost US$1.50 and is now priced at US$2.00 or more.

Silvia Ramírez, a consumer of these products, states that now she cannot afford to buy all the food products for her household because her budget is not enough.

Fruit and vegetable suppliers state that the main causes of these increases are due to the recent increases in fuel costs, which affects their sales and consumers.

The merchants assure that they have implemented strategies to not affect their sales or the pockets of their customers, maintaining prices, but reducing the quantity of product.
