Tatiana vessel arrives in El Salvador to transport natural gas to the Central American region

Written by Evelyn Alas

Tatiana is the first liquefied natural gas carrier in the Central American region. The vessel arrived at the Port of Acajutla, in Sonsonate to remain permanently anchored on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. An average of US$1,000 million was invested in this project.

The vessel Tatiana is from the Keppel shipyard in Singapore, which traveled the Pacific Ocean for several weeks to dock in El Salvador, and is a unit that transports 29,500 cubic meters of natural gas in its liquid state loaded in South Korea.

The total capacity of the floating liquefied natural gas storage and regasification unit (FSRU) is 137,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, with a length of 290 meters, a beam of 46 meters and a draft of almost 12 meters.

The vessel was specially designed for the Energía del Pacífico project by BW LNG, a global leader in floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) solutions.

The President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, arrived at the Port of Acajutla to receive the ship and expressed that investments in productive infrastructure will generate many indirect jobs, but also it generates the raw material for more companies to settle in the country.

He added that the ship is the terminal that will deliver the raw material for the engines of Energía del Pacífico to generate 30% of the country's electricity demand.

Also the authorities of Energía del Pacífico Ltda. de C.V. (EDP), together with the founder of Invenergy LLC, Michael Polsky, a global developer of sustainable energy solutions based in the United States, welcomed the arrival of the vessel.

The generation plant will be ready for the start-up of the engines and to carry out the necessary calibrations that will lead to the operation stage for the generation of electric energy in the first months of 2022.

The objectives to be achieved with the ship are to diversify the energy matrix, guarantee the generation of energy for the coming years, greatly reduce the production of greenhouse gases, and use natural gas as an energy generator.

Likewise, the President pointed out that it is a cheaper and cleaner energy than many of the other energies currently produced and consumed by the country, which will help to greatly reduce the production of Greenhouse Gases (GHG).

He said that investors like Michael Polsky can invest in El Salvador with total legal security and ease, which can help generate direct and indirect jobs in the country.
