European Union with new laws on imports of products

Written by Denis Muñoz

The European Union (EU) has introduced new legislation to prevent commodity imports from contributing to deforestation.

Considering that El Salvador exports to the EU several goods such as: gold coffee, tuna loins and canned tuna, sugar, herbicides, germination inhibitors and plant growth regulators, mosses and lichens, textile manufactures, wood and fabric handicrafts, honey and frozen fish, it must follow the new import laws that the EU has established.

What is the new EU regulation?

Based on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), from the end of 2024, it will only be possible to trade certain commodities (livestock, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soy and timber) on the EU market if they are:

  • Deforestation-free: produced on land that has not been subject to deforestation after december 31, 2020.
  • Legally produced: produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production.

Importers of products into the EU market will be required to prepare a due diligence declaration, including product geolocation and date, supplier identification and verifiable information that the products are deforestation-free and legally produced. Operators are also expected to assess the risk of non-compliance and show evidence of risk mitigation measures.
