The Director General of the Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) Manuel Otero, announced that it will open the doors of its professional internship program to Ukrainian women graduates in agricultural sciences who are refugees.

IICA has a scholarship program for professional internships in agricultural research, development and innovation to support its work in favor of the agricultural sector and rural communities, and the Director General of the specialized agency decided to open this program to young Ukrainian women trained in a country known for its agricultural tradition and its importance as a producer of raw materials for food processing.

The head of IICA said that the institution seeks to create opportunities and decision-making spaces with a perspective that especially favors migrants and women.

He also urged other international and national institutions to join this initiative, offering a present and a future to generations displaced and frustrated by conflicts.

The decision to open IICA's doors to internships for Ukrainian professionals is also part of the international organization's commitment to increase its efforts to provide cooperation and technical assistance to the countries of the Americas, many of which are food importers, in order to address and mitigate the consequences of the conflict in the region.

The Director General of IICA recently warned that the situation in Eastern Europe could have negative consequences for global food security, given that the impact on world peace, with the widespread uncertainty it causes, disrupts the normal functioning of markets and jeopardizes food supplies, affecting prices and the prices of key inputs for food production.
