Electricity prices to increase 9% starting today

Written by Coralia Cuellar

The Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM) informed this sunday, october 15, that the cost of electric energy tariffs will increase.

The increase will be 9%, which indicates a slight variation in relation to the previous quarter, this was informed through a statement published in its official Twitter account by the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas.

The measure will be in force as from sunday, october 15 until january 14, 2024.

One of the main causes pointed out by management is the significant reduction in the amount of rainfall between july, august and september of this year, which would have affected the generation of hydroelectric energy in the country. Likewise, other factors, such as the use of thermal energy, which is more expensive, and international geopolitical conflicts have affected the production and distribution of oil and its derivatives at international level.

"We clarify that the real variation in the price of energy for this quarter should have been 16.5%; however, the Government took measures to reduce the increase, safeguarding the pockets of salvadorans", indicates the DGEHM.

Additionally, the electricity subsidy will continue for all households that consume less than 105 kWh (kilowatts/hour) per month.
